Jollibee Foods Corp (JFC)., the Philippines’ homegrown and arguably most popular hamburger chain, opened to long lines in Edinburgh, Scotland last week.  The branch, located in Princes Street, is the brand’s 10th store in the United Kingdom, and is part of its aggressive expansion plan into Europe.  While the company’s Facebook page said that the first customers who came in were composed mainly of overseas Filipinos, it is expected to attract a lot of students and food lovers who frequent the area, which is also considered one of the country’s busiest shopping hubs.

There are 54,000 Filipinos in the United Kingdom who would welcome the familiar Bee on British shores. At the same time, some locals in the cities where Jollibee has a branch have expressed their enthusiasm for its trademark spicy Chickenjoy, with Jollibee Chicken Sandwich and Yumburger following closely behind.

In a statement released about the opening, Jollibee said, “The restaurant expects to see lots of students and young people frequent the store, looking for new experiences and delicious food at great value. Both the Edinburgh and Glasgow restaurants will serve halal meat.”

Jollibee is set to open its second Scottish restaurant in Glasgow on March 25. It has more than 1,500 branches spanning 17 countries including Canada, Italy, Singapore, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the United States, and of course, the Philippines.

“From a single store in 2018, we’ve now grown to a network of 10 stores across the UK. We share this milestone with all our customers across the UK and Europe, and we look forward to bringing joy to even more locations soon,” said Ernesto Tanmantiong, Jollibee Group CEO.
