Matsuya (松屋), a Japanese Gyumeshi (beef on rice) chain from Tokyo, will open its first store in Hong Kong on Sunday.
Established in Tokyo in 1966, Matsuya is a Japanese Gyumeshi chain restaurant that offers affordable Japanese dining to customers. Its menu features signature dishes including Gyumeshi, set meals, and curry. The brand has expanded to 1,265 stores across Japan and 18 stores overseas, according to the release.
Located at Chuang's London Plaza (莊士倫敦廣場), the new store spans over 3,000 square feet with 45 seats. It features a minimalist Japanese interior design, aiming to offer a comfortable dining environment.
Jun Hamano, managing director, Matsuya Foods Hong Kong, said: "Hong Kong people like eating out, and Japanese dining is very popular here. We hope to provide high-quality food and service, ensuring satisfaction for the people of Hong Kong with Matsuya's products."
The Hong Kong office will support the operation of Matsuya’s directly managed stores in Hong Kong, including purchasing, product development, store development, and human resources development. Meanwhile, the company is planning to open a second branch in Hong Kong later this year.
Jimmy Chiang, associate director-general of investment promotion, Invest Hong Kong, said: "Hong Kong is a leading culinary hub of Asia. Matsuya's entry into Hong Kong demonstrates the company's support for and confidence in the local retail food industry. We wish it every success in the future."

Apart from Matsuya, other Japanese restaurant brands are also expanding their footprint into Hong Kong. Back in June, Japanese ramen brand “Machida Shoten” expanded its Asia footprint with its first store in Hong Kong, bringing authentic Yokohama style ramen to the city. The Hong Kong store is located at Airside, Kai Tak, Kowloon, according to Tatsuya Sasajima, executive vice president of Machida Shoten's parent company Gift Holdings.
In February, Japanese izakaya chain Torikizoku (鳥貴族) also said it is entering Hong Kong through a partnership with local food company Four Seas Mercantile (四洲集團).
Under the franchise agreement, Torikizoku will be operated by Four Seas Mercantile, using the Torikizoku's trademark and technology. Meanwhile, Torikizoku will provide operational support for the venture.
