Over 1,000 drones will light up Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour as they take flight to present the world’s first Doraemon drone show on Saturday.
The drones will display images of characters from the popular manga series, including Doraemon, anywhere door (隨意門) and take-copter (竹蜻蜓). The 15-minute show will also feature voiceovers by local voice actors.
The drone show also acts as a teaser of the upcoming large-scale Doraemon-themed exhibition in the city, following the launch of 100 Doraemon sculptures outside Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui back in 2012.
This time, the character's parent company Fujiko Pro has partnered up with Hong Kong art studio AllRightsReserved again to bring a large-scale exhibition “100% DORAEMON & FRIENDS” tour to the city, to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Doraemon’s creator Fujiko F Fujio (藤子·F·不二雄).
Hong Kong will be the first stop of the exhibition tour and it will be held from 13 July. Meanwhile, more exhibition details will be announced on 25 May with ticket sales commencing at the same time.
With both free-entry zones and ticketed exhibition areas, the exhibition will feature the comprehensive Doraemon world of manga art and movies. According to the release, it will also bring a secret gadget appearing for the first time in this event, a "100% friends-calling bell". Shaking this gadget can summon friends to come, closely following the theme of the exhibition: "A true friend is always there when you need them". This aims to call on friends worldwide to come to Hong Kong to meet Doraemon.
Visitors are required to purchase ticketed exhibition area tickets and reserve the admission day and time online. The quota for each session is limited and on a first-come-first-served basis.
Tickets will go on sale at online travel platform Klook from this Saturday (25 May), and upon entry into the ticketed exhibition, each ticket holder can redeem the non-sale items. The exhibition is also offering a premium set, which includes a ticket, and a complimentary "100% DORAEMON and FRIENDS" acrylic pin set with stand and stickers, aiming to allow fans to collect the whole set of limited-edition pins at once.
