HK sees more than 1.7m outbound trips made by locals during Easter

Hong Kong has seen more than 1.7 million residents travelling out of the city during the four-day long Easter holiday from 29 March to 1 April.

According to the official figures from Immigration Department, Hong Kong has seen over 1.7 million departures of local residents over the past weekend, representing a whopping 84% of the total number of outbound travellers during the period.

The data showed that 700,808 locals left the city on Friday, while 453,946 left on Saturday and 358,300 departed the city on Sunday. In terms of the transportation means, on 29 March,  59,186 Hong Kong residents chose to travel through Express Rail Link West Kowloon, 155,071 crossed borders through Lo Wu, 144,020 passed through Lok Ma Chau Spur Line and 85,269 chose Shenzhen Bay to leave the city.

Among all the outbound visitors, only 14,740 residents visited Macau on the first day of the Easter holiday, account for only 2% of the total outbound visitors on 29 March.

Meanwhile, the number of arrivals from mainland stood at 289,952 during the Easter break and was less than one fifth of the Hongkongers visitors leaving Hong Kong. The Immigration Department recorded 66,729 inbound trips made by mainland visitors on Friday, 105,250 on Saturday, 68,274 on Sunday and 49,699 on Monday.

Most recently, Hong Kong was expecting to see around 11 million inbound and outbound travellers in Hong Kong during the upcoming Easter and Ching Ming festive period, according to the Immigration Department.

The estimate was made in consultation with the Shenzhen General Station of Exit & Entry Frontier Inspection. The two parties believe that around 9.5 million passengers will transit through land boundary control points from 28 March to 7 April, while around 1.5 million passengers will travel by air and sea.

Additionally, the passenger traffic at the Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau, and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge control points will be highly active, with daily averages of approximately 207k, 169k, and 143k passengers respectively.
