HK secures broadcasting rights for Paris Olympics

The Hong Kong government has secured the broadcasting rights for the Paris Olympics Games, enabling citizens to enjoy free coverage of the games on four TV stations this summer.

The Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau has reached television broadcasting arrangements with three free-to-air broadcasters, including TVB, ViuTV and HoyTV, as well as local broadcaster Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), for the coverage of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

During a media session before the regular executive council meeting on Tuesday (9 April 2024), Hong Kong chief executive John Lee said the partnership between the government and the broadcasters aims to create a vibrant social atmosphere, promote sports activities, support athletes, foster unity, stimulate economic activity through the joyful social ambiance, and generate social value through a multi-faceted approach.

While the government cannot disclose the specific amount paid for the broadcasting rights due to confidentiality clauses, Lee said the cost is less than what the government had paid in the past for the Tokyo Olympics. “The amount paid is reasonable and value for money,” Lee added.

“The broadcasting organisations can also create economic value and advertising revenue through the broadcasting of the Olympic Games. Through various broadcasts, including airing the events in large shopping malls, it will increase foot traffic, stimulate commercial activities, and boost businesses in sectors such as food and beverage and retail,” Lee added.

Given that there's obvious time difference between Tokyo and Paris, Lee understood that the viewership in Hong Kong this year might not be as high as Tokyo Olympics three years ago, but his main consideration is how the negative effects of not arranging screenings compare with the positive effects of arranging screenings now, and whether it is worth the money.

"It is indeed not as easy to promote the Paris Olympics as the Tokyo Olympics, but there are still many ways, because if it involves some large-scale events, such as the World Cup, everyone will find time to watch it in their own way, and they will actively participate and watch live even if there is a time difference," he said.

TVB has shown support to the government in acquiring the broadcasting rights to The Paris 2024 Olympic Games. “This move not only emphasises the government's firm commitment to promoting the spirit of sports and supporting the development of local sports, but it also allows the citizens of Hong Kong to watch this international event gratuitously, enjoying the thrilling Olympic competitions and related programmes,” the statement reads.

Meanwhile, ViuTV said the government’s acquisition of television broadcasting rights for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games can promote local sports and cultural development.

“We will allocate the necessary resources to produce and broadcast Olympic programmes and competitions, aiming to provide the widest and most diverse viewing experience for audiences in Hong Kong through free-to-air television, streaming channels, and social media platforms," ViuTv's statement reads.

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games are scheduled to take place from 26 July 2024, to 11 August 2024, top athletes from around the world will gather to compete in 32 sports events for the medals.
