The Hong Kong government has praised Tatler Asia for being responsible after it announced a partial refund to those who purchased tickets through Klook to watch the previous friendly match between Inter Miami and the Hong Kong team.

In a statement to MARKETING-INTERACTIVE, a spokesperson from Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau said that Tatler’s refund arrangement demonstrates a responsible approach and showcases its proactive attitude in taking responsibility.

“The government welcomes the organiser's commitment and expects the specific arrangements for the refund process to be announced around mid-March. Individuals planning to request a refund are advised to promptly follow the provided instructions to complete the necessary procedures,” the spokesperson added.

On Monday (18 March 2024), Tatler has announced a 50% refund to those who bought tickets via Klook. Customers who purchased tickets through Klook will receive an email notification from the platform on 18 March 2024.

They will also need to respond and accept the terms and conditions of the 50% ticket refund by 12 April 2024. Refunds will be processed within 30 days from 12 April 2024 and may differ depending on the recipient’s bank policy and process.

Meanwhile, customers who purchased tickets directly from Tatler Asia, including tickets from event sponsors and partners will be contacted by their dedicated account manager with information on ticket refunds.

“No handling fee, or other costs, or expenses associated in connection with the match, including but not limited to expenses for travel, accommodation, food and/or beverages, merchandise and/or souvenirs will be refunded,” Tatler's statement reads.

Tatler's refund comes after thousands of Lionel Messi fans expressed anger and asked for a refund after they paid HK$4,880 to watch the Argentina football star stay rooted at the bench throughout the match.

The Hong Kong government also expressed its disappointment that Messi could neither play in the friendly match nor explain to the fans in person upon request. The authorities required the organiser to take responsibility, including a reduction of the amount of funding as a result of Messi not being able to play in the match.

Following the Lionel Messi fiasco, Tatler Asia decided to withdraw its application for a HK$16m grant from the government regarding the event. It also promised to offer a 50% refund.
