HK Customs launches Douyin account to enhance communication with mainland residents

Hong Kong Customs has launched an official Douyin account, further expanding its social media channels to enhance communication with the public, including Hong Kong and mainland residents.

Following the launch of its YouTube channel, Facebook page and Instagram account, the newly launched Douyin account aims to serve as another online channel for quick and direct access to the department's work and the latest information for Hong Kong and mainland residents, especially mainland tourists who intend to visit Hong Kong, so that they can better grasp the useful Customs information.

A 17-second promotional video featuring Louise Ho, the commissioner of customs and excise, has been produced and uploaded to Customs' official Douyin account as a prelude to the launch. In the video, Ho spoke in Putonghua while the video was uploaded with simplified Chinese subtitles. Ho welcomed mainlanders to Hong Kong during the Labour Day Golden Week and promoted another Customs’ Douyin video "Smart Consumption Tips" (精明消費錦囊). She also advised people to like the Customs' Douyin account.

A check by MARKETING-INTERACTIVE saw on Douyin that the video has gained over 110,000 likes and 6,682 comments. Some netizens said they appreciated that the video was equipped with simplified Chinese subtitles, adding that they could not read most traditional Chinese words. Meanwhile, some said that Ho looked a bit nervous, but her level of Putonghua was acceptable. Meanwhile, the Douyin account has garnered more than 24,000 fans and over 120,000 likes since its launch on 26 April.

On the other hand, with the Labour Day Golden Week period approaching, Hong Kong Customs has posted a promotional video on Douyin to stimulate common unfair trade practices through a short drama, reminding tourists to stay alert when shopping and avoid falling into consumer pitfalls of unfair trade practices. The video has gained around 10,000 likes and 195 comments.

Don't miss: Authorities turn to Weibo and Xiaohongshu to share great stories about Hong Kong

In the meantime, Hong Kong authorities have started creating Chinese social media accounts such as Xiaohongshu and Weibo to tell positive stories of Hong Kong internationally. Chris Tang Ping Keung, the secretary for security in Hong Kong said on his Facebook page last September, that he has launched his official account on Weibo and Xiaohongshu upon Mid-Autumn Festival.

Tang’s Weibo has over 43,000 followers at the moment, despite having only three posts describing his trip to Yuen Long’s old lantern street and bakery. His three posts are also posted on his Xiaohongshu account.
