Several groups have expressed their interest in sponsoring the monthly drone and fireworks performances as laid out in the latest Budget, said Hong Kong’s finance chief Paul Chan.

According to his weekly blog, Chan said several groups have said they are interested in sponsoring the monthly pyrotechnic and drone shows as part of their publicity projects.

He added that some eateries and retailers are also planning to roll out a new round of promotional initiatives to celebrate the events, he added.

Due to the drastic change in consumer behaviour, the government hopes to offer a series of diversified experiences to tourists, to make them stay longer and spend more in Hong Kong.

"The point is to attract visitors to stay another night when they find there are these [drone and fireworks] shows." He added the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is looking into the content and expects the first show in May.

Apart from these shows, upcoming mega events and forums include International Film Festival, Art Basel and the HKMA-led Global Financial Leaders' Investment Summit, hoping to bring more business and sightseeing tourists, as well as stimulating local spend.

He also said that the three main goals of the budget are to stabilise short-term confidence, strengthen strategic arrangements for long-term economic development, and ensure the stability and sustainability of public finances.

Chan reiterated that finance; innovation and technology are still the two main engines for Hong Kong to promote high-quality development, and the government will continue to invest resources to further consolidate and enhance Hong Kong's competitiveness and advantages.

The shows are part of a HK$1.1 billion investment to promote mega events and boost local tourism, with each show possibly costing more than HK$1 million and the government may look for sponsorship, Chan said last week upon the release of the latest Budget.

As part of the initiative, HKTB will hold pyrotechnic and drone shows against the backdrop of the splendid night views of Victoria Harbour every month. The HKTB will also revamp its light-and-sound show, "A symphony of lights" (幻彩詠香江).

The Development Bureau (DEVB) will also introduce commercial facilities such as food and beverages, retail and entertainment on a pilot basis at selected suitable harbourfront locations to bring convenience and better experience to visitors.

Apart from inviting visitors to Hong Kong, the government will visit regions and markets to tell the good stories of the city and expand its circle of friends. The government will launch a new sponsored overseas speaking engagement programme.  Renowned scholars and industry leaders will be sponsored to attend overseas events and give speeches to promote Hong Kong and its many advantages.
