Fan Bingbing kicks off role as Melaka's newest tourism ambassador

Chinese actress Fan Bingbing has started work as Melaka Friendship Tourism ambassador 2024 in the state capital of Melaka City. Hundreds of people gathered at Bandar Hilir, a key Melaka heritage site, to catch a glimpse of Fanas reported by The Straits Times. Some gathered as early as 10am to wait for her arrival.

Fan, named one of the 100 Most Influential People in 2017, is known for acting in both popular Chinese and international productions, such as The Empress of China and X-Men: Days of Future Past. She has 63 million followers on Weibo and 4.3 million followers on Instagram, and is also known for her long line of fashion endorsements.

She was appointed as Melaka’s state tourism ambassador to promote Visit Melaka 2024, the state's tourism campaign that seeks to reposition itself as a key tourism destination worldwide. As part of her role, Fan has visited key tourist destinations of Melaka, such as the Baba House Melaka, Melaka River Cruise and local Peranakan restaurants. She is also seen donning various traditional wear like the Nonya Kebaya at these sites, as well as eating local delights like durian cendol.

Fan assured Chinese tourists that most of the locals were fluent in Mandarin. She also added that Melaka has similarities with Yunnan province in China, as both have a rich history, as reported by The Star.

In her social media posts, she is welcomed by key figures such as Chief Minister Ab Rauf Yusoh and the King of Malaysia, His Excellency Tun Seri Setia Dr. Haji Mohd Ali Rustam.

Rauf had previously met Jersey Chong, Fan's international manager, to discuss the actress' visit. Rauf added that he believed the presence of Fan would attract more tourists from China and Asia to visit Melaka.
