Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil has reportedly reminded influencers to take extra care when they handle podcasts or upload content on social media to prevent negative effects on the community.

He also said that the government will carry out periodic monitoring and study actions that may be taken against influencers who upload non-constructive content, according to Bernama. Minister Fahmi was speaking at the launch of the Youth Empowerment Fair in Kuala Lumpur.

While Minister Fahmi said that there is no need to take any action for now, he agreed with Hot FM radio presenter and former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin that influencers must be mindful of the power of their influence.

Jamaluddin previously said that podcast operators should be conscious of sensitive issues and conduct research about the topics they discuss, according to the report.

As Minister Fahmi hopes that the industry will self-regulated, to safeguard how easily influenced children can be, he also urged parents to monitor the social media content they are exposed to.

Furthermore, he will be holding meetings with TikTok and other social media operators after Chinese New Year celebrations to discuss the issue of children’s safety online.

The government appears to be closely monitoring online content as Minister Fahmi also reportedly warned against abusing the freedom of speech in Malaysia by making unfounded allegations or statements that can threaten a country’s democracy.

Through the creation of various content on social media such as TikTok, those with opposing views are free to state their opinion, minister Fahmi said.
