Paint company, Dulux Indonesia, recently launched “Project Yellow Canteen” in a bid to eliminate flies from school canteens to create a healthier dining environment for students.
“Project Yellow Canteen” was researched and conceptualised in partnership with creative agency, INNOCEAN Indonesia.

According to a release by INNOCEAN Indonesia, Indonesia’s hot and humid climate creates an ideal breeding ground for flies, which can transmit more than 65 diseases such as typhoid fever, cholera, and diarrhoea. Children are even more susceptible as they tend to have more neglectful hygiene practices during mealtimes.
In response, the research team conducted an on-ground experiment involving two tables - one painted a vibrant yellow and one untouched. When exposed to flies, the flies gravitated to the non-yellow table, revealing their aversion to the colour yellow.
Dulux and INNOCEAN Indonesia then brought these findings to school canteens, covering the tables, benches, and walls in cheerful yellow hues. Dubbed “Yellow Canteens”, the project brought about cleaner and healthier dining spaces for students, enhancing their overall well-being and comfort.
As Dulux’s corporate social responsibility initiative, “Project Yellow Canteen” also highlighted the impact of simple but innovative solutions within communities.
This is not the first time paint has become the subject of community initiatives. In May 2022, dental care brand Darlie Malaysia showcased two mural pieces painted by two artists from East Malaysia. Unveiled through a film titled “The Art of Semangat”, the project aimed to showcase the spirit of East Malaysians as it followed the artists on their journeys to unite the people of Sarawak and Sabah through art.
"As an oral care brand, it’s not often that we get to collaborate with artistic talents, what more for a good cause, that’s why this piece of content excited us a lot,” said Ian Chew, general manager of Darlie Malaysia, at the time. He added that the collaboration demonstrated connections, with Darlie stands for.
