Digital Penang, an agency established in 2020 under the Penang state government has named a Ts. Ng Kwang Ming (pictured) to CEO. The agency aims to accelerate efforts to capture opportunities in the digital economy and promote a digitally engaged society. Ng will replace outgoing CEO Tony Yeoh following his retirement.

Ng’s project of focus will be the Digital Transformation Plan 1.0 which was launched in March 2021. The plan aims to lay the foundation for the digitalisation journey which is aligned to the Penang2030 vision. Ng will continue the digital push and lay the next phase of the masterplan.

According to his LinkedIn, prior to becoming the CEO of Digital Penang, Ng was a self-employed consulting technologist from August 2021 to January 2023, focusing on transformation and innovation proposals and harmonising new e-services to state level economic development via cloud solutions.  Prior to that, he was the senior director and head of research and digital technologies at MIMOS, where he worked for nearly 15 years, from 2007 to August 2021. He has also worked at IBM and Motorola.

Chief minister of Penang and chairman of Digital Penang YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow said that the board is pleased to announce Ng’s appointment. “Having had prior experiences in Malaysia’s Tech and IT private sector as well as a Federal agency, I am confident that Ng will take the digital transformation to the next level and build a strong digital ecosystem for Penang,” he added.

In November last year, Digital Penang partnered with Subway Education Group (SEG) to explore opportunities in building the digital ecosystem to strengthen Penang’s digital talent pool. This is in line with the national agenda and state’s Penang2030 vision, in order to bring opportunities and synergies to groom software tech talents to become world-class developers and tech entrepreneurs. This initiative would also help create job opportunities to meet the industry demands.

Previous CEO, Yeoh said that to ever-growing and evolving demands for tech talents in the state, Digital Penang is committed to exploring initiatives and programmes to develop local talent with industry and global skills to accelerate digital tech careers. As ecosystem partners to build capabilities of tech talents and entrepreneurs, the state welcomes this partnership and looks forward to investing in talent development programmes that will benefit industry demands and the ecosystem in Penang,” he added.
