Malaysian communications provider, CelcomDigi, has announced a collaboration with urban development, i-City, to accelerate the digital development of Shah Alam as a smart city. It aims to deploy CelcomDigi’s fibre infrastructure and access to 5G connectivity and technology to the city by 2025, according to a statement by the brand.
The partnership deploys CelcomDigi’s latest own-built fibre infrastructure in i-City. This will utilise the provider’s fibre-to-the-room (FTTR) service. Under the partnership, i-City residents will also have access to CelcomDigi’s fibre plans at exclusive promotional prices.

“We will offer convergence solutions for all their internet and lifestyle needs such as home entertainment, gaming, smart home Internet of Things applications and many more,” said Datuk Idham Nawawi, chief executive officer of CelcomDigi.
He added that CelcomDigi aims to use affordable fibre, 5G, and 4G technologies to improve its customer experience and elevate the livelihoods of i-City residents within a digital ecosystem.
Tan Sri Lim Kim Hong, chairman of i-City, added that the collaboration with CelcomDigi will open up more possibilities for the residents of Shah Alam amidst the nation’s move to Industry 4.0. According to him, as the administrative hub of Selangor, Shah Alam has gained increased appeal among investors, property buyers, and tenants, due to its strategic location and accessibility.
“The launch of 5G in Malaysia will see a wider application of Internet of Things. Now the potential to transform lives by connecting and empowering everyday objects and devices to enhance convenience, efficiency, and safety through data-driven automation and control becomes greater,” he said.
“As such, there is so much added value for residents with the integration of affordable ultra-fast internet connectivity at home and the convergence of 5G on mobile phones”.
He added that as a tech-centric area, i-City was officially designated as an international zone by Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah. Since then, it has evolved into a preferred living destination for those seeking a comprehensive lifestyle experience that encompasses work, residence, and entertainment.
The partnership will also pave the way for i-City to launch its latest attraction, a five-dimensional edutainment facility, with the latest immersive technology.
This partnership follows CelcomDigi’s refreshed corporate brand after the 2022 merger between Celcom and Digi. Since its merger, the company has integrated its services and products to introduce new offerings to Malaysia’s digital network. For example, it has actively spurred digitalisation and 5G adoption in its consumer base through its affordable 5G device bundles and MY5G series.
“We aspire for CelcomDigi to be a new innovation icon for the nation – an institution that has the scale and resources to be the nation’s digital growth engine,” said Datuk Idham, at the time.
