Brands most associated with Rosmah Mansor

Rosmah Mansor, the wife of former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak, has been found guilty of corruption. According to multiple media reports including The Star, Channel NewsAsia and The Straits Times, the High Court found Rosmah guilty of soliciting RM194 million in bribes to assist solar energy company Jepak Holdings in winning a RM1.25 billion solar hybrid project in 2016. The project covered hundreds of schools in Sarawak.
Malaysia's former first lady was also accused of accepting bribes amounting to RM6.5 million in total from Saidi Abang Samsudin, the owner of Jepak Holdings at the PM's official residence and later at her private residence in Kuala Lumpur, CNA reported. This occurred between December 2016 and September 2017. Her verdict came over a week after Najib lost his final appeal to overturn his 12-year jail term. Rosmah also failed to get Justice Zaini Mazlan recused from her case, contesting the fact that the judgement pronouncing her guilty was recently leaked online.
According to Milieu Insight, which surveyed 500 Malaysians on its app, the top brand which comes to mind when they think about Rosmah is Hermes (39%). This was followed by Rolex (33%), Prada (25%), Chanel (23%), Bijan (19%), Versace (17%), Super Ring (17%), Starbucks (15%), Cartier (13%), Richard Mille (11%), Chopard (9%), and Judith Leiber (8%). Other brands and terms that also popped up included "Evil villain Disney", "Plastic surgery", and "Voodoo".
Overall, 45% out of the 500 Malaysians surveyed by Milieu Insight cited the recent news about Rosmah as very good and somewhat good news, while 32% said it was neither good or bad. On the other hand, 23% said this was somewhat bad and very bad news. Many of them feel satisfied (36%) and relieved (20%) about the news while others felt disappointed (24%), angry (16%) and sad (15%). That said, only 17% of respondents trust the Malaysian government more and 40% trust them less. The remaining 43% said this news has no impact on their trust in the Malaysian government.
The poll was carried out online via Milieu’s proprietary online panel on September 1 to 2 2022 with n=500 Malaysians, Malaysia Permanent Residents and non-citizens residing in Malaysia. According to the research firm, the results are representative of the Malaysia resident population aged 16 and above by age, gender and ethnicity. The margin of error is +/- 4% at a 95% confidence level.
Separately, Meltwater also found that 1MDB (4.19k mentions), Hermes (2.73k mentions), Birkin (2.41k mentions) and Chanel (386 mentions) drew the bulk of the online chatter between 26 August to 1 September. The number of mentions about Rosmah rose 447% to 127k during that period. Most of the mentions originated from Malaysia and 52% of them were negative while 36% were neutral.
Separately, when Najib lost his final appeal recently, snack brand Super Ring saw a spike in mentions again, with many netizens celebrating the verdict by munching on the snack. Some also joked about delivering Super Ring to Kajang prison.
