FrieslandCampina's milk tea brand Black & White is partnering with 120 designated cha chaan tengs in the city to give away over 12,000 cups of Hong Kong-style milk tea throughout November.
Since 2013, Black & White has celebrated the annual Hong Kong milk tea day on the third Sunday of November. In celebration of its 12th anniversary, the brand will distribute 12,000 cups of Hong Kong-style milk tea on Monday to Friday in November on a first-come, first-served basis.
Targeting the general public and milk tea lovers in Hong Kong, Black & White wishes to support all Hong Kong people and stimulate the catering industry with the giveaway event, said a spokesperson from FrieslandCampina.
Other celebrating activities also include the "Black & White Perfect Pairing: The Citywide Food Showdown", in which the public is invited to vote online for their favourite dish for pairing Black & White milk tea from the Black & White Professional Picks: Top 10 Must-Try Delights.
This selection includes classic dishes from local cha chaan tengs that are thought to pair perfectly with Black & White milk tea. These include egg tarts, French toasts, pineapple buns, baked pork chop rice, sandwich, satay beef noodles, amongst others.
In addition to voting, participants are encouraged to write down the reasons for their choice of dish. The top 30 participants with the highest scores will have the chance to win an exclusive Engraved Black & White milk tea mug and saucer set.
The set is adorned with the iconic Holstein Friesian cow image which symbolises Hong Kong-style milk tea culture and personalised with the recipient’s chosen name, making this unique set a must-have for milk tea enthusiasts.
Done in collaboration with local agency To Be Communications, the initiative hopes to connect with the younger generation, increase public engagement, and help more people appreciate Black & White's evaporated milk and the valuable culture of Hong Kong teashops, said the spokesperson. The event will be promoted via print and online channels.
The spokesperson added that Black & White has been spearheading the development of Hong Kong-style milk tea drinking culture and growing up together with Hong Kong people since 1940. Its hero product, Black & White evaporated milk, has always been a favourite with both Hongkongers and local tea shops alike.
Tracy Fung, managing director of FrieslandCampina Hong Kong, said: “Hong Kong-style milk tea is a hallmark of Hong Kong dining, and Black & White, as the most widely used evaporated milk brand in tea restaurants across the city, is an indispensable ingredient for Hong Kong-style milk tea. Many people order Hong Kong-style milk tea when they visit cha chaan tengs because its unique creaminess and richness pair perfectly with any dish."
"With travel resuming globally, the food and beverage industry remains a vital pillar supporting Hong Kong's tourism. Black & White will continue to work alongside our tea restaurant partners to promote the unique and diverse culinary culture of Hong Kong to both local citizens and tourists, celebrating Hong Kong-style milk tea as an intangible cultural heritage and enhancing the reputation of our 'gourmet paradise'," she added.
