AlipayHK is expanding its service in Hong Kong's public transport by collaboration with HK Tramways and the New Lantao Bus Company. Following the expansion, the company said Alipay HK will cover about 90% of the city's public transport. The service is said to kick of in 2022.
Cyril Aubin, managing director of Hong Kong Tramways said, "Using QR codes on any types of transportation is the trend and HK Tramways is very pleased to cooperate with Alipay HK to launch a digital ride experience. If the system test goes well, citizens and tourists can use the AlipayHK 'Easy Travel Code' this year."
He added, "Hong Kong Tramways has been advancing with the times. While retaining the traditional appearance, they are also committed to incorporating innovative technologies to provide passengers with quality tram journeys."
Additionally, AlipayHK is collaborating with the New Lantao Bus Company to allow passengers to use QR codes to pay the fare on six routes. It is expected that a total of 150 buses will offer QR code scanners, covering every route on the Lantau Island.
The spokesman of the New Lantao Bus Company said, "We hope to offer an alternative for citizens and travellers. At the same time, we hope to leverage the popularity of AlipayHK to reach out to more users in Hong Kong, allowing them to know more about our business."
Venetia Lee, Head of AlipayHK, Alipay Macau and Taiwan, said, "I am very grateful for the support from the public transport operators, enabling the continuous expansion of AlipayHK's smart travel network. With the addition of various operators, AlipayHK expects to cover nearly 90% of all public transportation in Hong Kong within this year. At that time, AlipayHK users only need to use the code to take most of the transportation."
