Alibaba Group’s core eCommerce division Taobao and Tmall Group (TTG) is planning to accept Tencent's WeChat Pay for payment in the coming month, aiming to enhance user experience.

Driven by its user-first strategy, TTG and Taobao will enable all merchants to add WeChat Pay to their storefronts, enhancing user convenience and flexibility. This initiative also aims to create new business opportunities for merchants by expanding their consumer base, particularly in less-developed markets.

“We have always been open to collaborations, and have actively explored interoperability and partnerships with our peers. We are constantly working to enhance user experience by making shopping more convenient, enjoyable, and efficient,” said a spokesperson from TTG.

Meanwhile, Taobao and Tmall has posted notices on their platforms requesting feedback from merchants regarding the acceptance of WeChat Pay as an additional payment option.

This move represents a step forward for China’s cross-platform interoperability and enhances TTG’s competitiveness, according to the spokesperson. Furthermore, the collaboration between TTG and the WeChat ecosystem will unlock new business opportunities for merchants and level the playing field with domestic peers on connections with WeChat, thereby strengthening TTG’s market leadership, the spokesperson added.

Don’t miss: Taobao and Tmall Group transforms digital shopping experience with AI

Back in June, Taobao and TTG leveraged various AI features to transform the digital shopping experience while boosting operating efficiency for merchants.

The series of AI-powered tools ranges from personalised consumer-facing chatbots to visual generation applications for merchants.

This aligns with the three core strategies put forward by Alibaba Group CEO Eddie Wu in November last year: “To put users first, build an ecosystem for brands and merchants to thrive on our platform, and realise AI technology-driven innovation.”
