Social media giants Meta and TikTok have pledged their commitment to ensure online safety measures for children under the age of 13.

The media giants had a discussion with communications minister Fahmi Fadzil on Monday (8 April) regarding online safety for children. Other elements touched upon included the monitoring of content such as online gambling, scams, fake news and the 3R's (race, religion and royalty).

Both platforms were also given information about the government's plans to improve the laws as well as the operational guidelines of social media platforms in Malaysia, said Fahmi in a statement.

This is in line with the MADANI government's commitment to guarantee the right of Malaysian citizens while ensuring productive, harmonious and safe internet usage for all, he added.

Online safety has been a big point of interest for the minister as of late. Earlier in February this year, Fahmi encouraged mindful usage of social media while appearing in an episode of Ini Kopi Kita - Sembang Anak Malaysia, a talk show produced by the Department of Information.

During the episode, the minister addressed the fear of missing out (FOMO), excessive online sharing and how it impacts online users in today's digital era.

In the same episode, Fahmi said that not everything posted online - whether via an influencer or a regular person - is real. "Sometimes we forget that when people produce content, it's actually manufactured," said Fahmi. "Content is content. It's not real life."

The minister also added that social media is a way companies make money and addressed how there needs to be awareness when it comes to excessively sharing online. "Don't be a slave to social media. Social media is a way companies make money from our data. They make money from us, and our ideas, and our creativity. We're giving up our privacy," said Fahmi.
