2023 salary guide for HK marketers across industries

Talent crunch is still ongoing across various industries in Hong Kong as 42% of respondents in Hong Kong have worked for not more than two years in their current roles, while 76% of respondents across every age group, industry, market and seniority level, plan to look for new career prospects, according to the Talent Trends 2022 survey findings by Page Insights.
The impact is even more evident within the local marketing industry as marketing roles remain the top skills in demand for some of the sectors such as consumer and retail; banking and financial services, amongst others.
As marketing is constantly evolving and more brands have also shifted to digital channels since the pandemic, digital skills such as data analytics, content creation, and digital marketing are also required. Companies should consider reviewing salaries and developing non-monetary strategies to improve talent retention with the overall year-on-year inflation rate at 4%.

1. Consumer and retail industry
Within the consumer and retail industry, eCommerce operations management and sales, CRM and digital marketing, new business development and client servicing are the skills in demand. In fact, marketing team remains one of the indispensable roles within the industry as the average base annual salary of a marketing head is one of the highest amongst other departments. Besides, companies also invest in eCommerce, social media, omnichannel and digital marketing areas.
2. Banking and financial services industries
With sustainability high on the agenda, banking and financial services sectors are looking to hire more ESG specialists. Global investment managers are shifting their focus to alternative investments and fixed income. Skills in demand within the industry include python/VBA, business development and negotiation, amongst others. The average annual salary for a marketing director and head of communications ranges from HK$1,440,000 to HK$1,600,000.
3. Technology industry
On the other hand, there has been a constant new investment in IT digital transformation from legacy systems to self-service and automated tools in Hong Kong. Companies are driving and gaining market insights by relying on cloud-based data analytics, BI and AI platforms, according to the report.
Skills in demand include ETL and data warehousing, modern JavaScript framework, cloud, K8s, Magento. The average annual salary for marketing teams within the tech industry is HK$1,200,000, slightly less than a head of IT infrastructure.
