U Mobile has been chosen as Malaysia's second 5G network provider based on factors such as business and technical plans, complaint records, customer satisfaction, and its track record in infrastructure projects, according to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
In a statement, the MCMC said that a rigorous selection process was conducted with criteria emphasising on the provider's ability to offer diverse 5G services and enable Malaysians to enjoy high-speed connectivity at an affordable price.
As the second 5G network provider, U Mobile will be able to collaborate with other ecosystem partners subject to MCMC approval. Similarly, penalties will be imposed on U Mobile should there be non-compliance, said the MCMC.

In its statement, the MCMC stated that it is aware of U Mobile's current foreign shareholding, adding that it is the licensee's responsibility to inform MCMC of any change in the company's foreign shareholding.
With the establishment of the second 5G network, MCMC aims to pave the way for greater flexibility and comprehensive service coverage in the future and will promote competition as well as strengthen the resilience of the industry to allow Malaysians to enjoy high-speed connections at affordable prices.
It said it will continue to monitor quality standards among all service providers to ensure a strong and reliable telecommunications landscape for the future of the country.
The MCMC's statement also included frequently asked questions (FAQ) which addresses why Malaysia needs a second 5G network and why a dual network model will be beneficial for the country's telecommunications infrastructure as a whole.
In its statement, the MCMC clarified that Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) will maintain its current role and responsibilities and will continue to operate as usual as part of the dual 5G network. It also assured that no public funds will be allocated for the provision of the country's second G network. U Mobile will be charged for related fees, in accordance with the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, explained MCMC.
With the selection of the second 5G network, MCMC's goal is to ensure nationwide coverage and accessibility, it said, adding that the availability of the second 5G network will increase competition in the telecommunications industry.
This will prompt service providers to offer high-quality and innovative services at more competitive prices, benefiting consumers and driving the growth of sectors such has manufacturing, information technology and the digital economy, added MCMC.
The push for 5G network has been a big focus for Malaysia in recent years. This is especially since more must be done regarding 5G services to continue positioning Malaysia as a prime destination for foreign investment, communications minister Fahmi Fadzil reportedly said in April this year.
Meanwhile, at the Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2024 (MWC2024) earlier in February this year, Malaysia was ranked number one globally for 5G consistency score with a score of 97.2%.
Currently, Malaysia is ahead of North Macedonia (94.06%) and the United Arab Emirates (93.88%).
