Meanwhile, among the list of celebrities that trended on TikTok this year included Baby Shima, Alieff Irfan, Alvin Chong, Aeril Zafrel, Nora Danish, Achey Bocey and Mugen Rao. In addition to keeping users entertained, TikTok also rolled out key initiatives during the year, including its in-app Family Pairing safety tool which allows for added control over one's activity on the platform.
It also created an FAQ page in partnership with the World Health Organisation to provide users with verified information on the pandemic to curb misinformation on the Internet. To encourage Malaysians to stay at home, it also launched TikTok Livestream beginning with the #StayAtHome LIVE! Specials, featuring the likes of Alvin Chong and Faizal Tahir. Over the past few months, the #StayAtHome initiative has since evolved to include TikTok Stage with international celebrities, as well as cyber wellness panel discussions comprising TikTok and key NGOs in the country. At the same time, TikTok also rolled out a seasonal programme named TikTok Rewards, which saw it partnering with brands to bring users exclusive vouchers and gifts via earning and redeeming points for rewards.
Separately on the global front, the Trump administration is still in talks with TikTok's parent company ByteDance for a deal that would put TikTok ownership in the country in American hands. This comes despite the lapse in deadline, The New York Times reported. The US government ordered the sale of TikTok's assets in the US in August and in September, Oracle was named TikTok's technology provider, with multiple media outlets reporting that it plans to acquire a minority stake in the company.
