Tesla reportedly lays off new marketing team after just four months

Tesla has laid off its newly formed marketing team, after just four months of launching it.

The company cut its entire US "growth content" team in its recent round of layoffs, according to a report from Bloomberg. The growth content team included a group of 40 people and is led by senior manager Alex Ingram.

Ingram and Jorge Milburn, who lead the global team, were also reportedly dismissed.

Currently, Tesla reportedly still has a small group of marketing employees based in Europe.

In an X post, a user said Tesla "could've done a better job with their ads." To which, CEO Elon Musk responded with, "Exactly. The ads were far too generic - could've been any car."

The cut is a pullback from Musk's initial ad strategy. The carmaker had built a brand largely through word-of-mouth but announced that it would be dipping its toes into advertising in May last year.

"I hear your logical point which is that there are amazing features and functionality about Tesla that people just don't know about," said Musk during the 2023 annual shareholder meeting.

"I believe in taking suggestions, so we'll try a little advertising and see how it goes."

The sacking of the marketing team come after Tesla told staff that it was laying off more than 10% of its workforce, according to Business Insider. In an internal memo reportedly sent by Musk, the layoff is to enable Tesla to be lean, innovative and hungry for the next growth cycle.

Meanwhile, Tesla reported lower-than-expected delivery numbers earlier this month. In a statement, Tesla blamed the decline in deliveries on its production ramp for its refreshed Model 3, an arson attack at its factory new Berlin and supply-chain issues caused by the Red Sea conflict.
