In an industry built on storytelling and creativity, women have long been at the forefront of shaping narratives that move audiences and redefine culture. Yet, behind their success lies a journey of resilience, leadership, and breaking barriers.
As we celebrate International Women's Day 2025, we highlight the voices of women who have carved their paths in Indonesia's agency landscape, challenging norms and inspiring future generations. Check out what Tanya Tresnasari, Indonesia country manager at Mutant Communications, has to say.
MARKETING-INTERACTIVE: What inspired you to pursue a career in this industry, and what has kept you motivated along the way?
Tresnasari: My career in the communications industry began in 2001 at an advertising agency, where I worked on various campaigns, handling both above and below the line across industries for 13 years. This experience gave me a solid foundation in advertising and client management and kept me motivated to learn further about the communications industry. In 2015, I switched to PR, discovering a passion for the field. While unexpected, this change highlighted how my advertising skills enhanced my ability to develop comprehensive client strategies.
In the past 10 years, my PR experience has emphasised the importance of reputation management through media and storytelling, reinforcing my belief in the power of communication.
MARKETING-INTERACTIVE: Can you share a pivotal moment in your career that shaped your approach to leadership or creativity?
Tresnasari: My experience in the leadership team over the past 10 years has shaped my leadership style and creativity. With 90% of the team comprising young consultants from both the Gen Z and millennial generations, I've learned to recognise and complement each team member's strengths and weaknesses.
This approach has allowed us to collaborate effectively, drive more team creativity, and achieve outstanding results for our clients' campaigns and meet our agency's business goals.
MARKETING-INTERACTIVE: What challenges have you faced as a woman in the industry, and how have you navigated them?
Tresnasari: Navigating the fast-paced communications industry as a working mother presents a unique challenge in terms of personal time management.
I'm committed to being actively involved in my teenage son's developmental milestones and educational journey, even while building my career as a leader. Finding an agency with a great working culture is the best answer for me.
I'm fortunate to work for Mutant that understands the demands of working motherhood, offering the flexibility necessary to thrive in both roles.
MARKETING-INTERACTIVE: What's one piece of advice you'd give your younger self when starting out?
Tresnasari: Learning by doing, accepting criticism, and dedicated self-development are essential for building a strong career foundation. Regular self evaluation is also important to drive continuous work performance improvement.
As these women continue to lead, mentor, and shape the future of the industry, their stories serve as a powerful reminder: success is not about fitting into predefined moulds—it's about redefining them entirely.
