Efforts to produce more local talents should be supported across various sectors, not just the high-tech industry, investment, trade and industry minister Zafrul Abdul Aziz reportedly said.

During an official visit to several electrical and electronics, and semiconductor facilities in Penang on Saturday, the minister reportedly noted that companies were actively supporting the development of science, technology, engineering and mathematics talent, as well as technical and vocational education and training.

The minister reportedly added that nurturing talent is a national responsibility, and that the government aims for various industries to support these efforts to boost Malaysia's industrial sector.

On a statement on X, the minister said that the national semiconductor strategy (NSS) aims to provide 60,000 skilled manpower in the semiconductor sector to ensure Malaysia has sufficient skilled manpower.

He added that vocational education and training is an important aspect in ensuring the continuity of the semiconductor industry. With continued cooperation, the minister hopes that Malaysia will continue to be a major hub in the E&E and semiconductor sector.

According to the Asean+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO), Malaysia is on track to become a high-income nation by the end of the decade, dubbing Malaysia the 'Silicon Valley' of the East.

Chief economist Hoe Ee Khor reportedly said that the country is backed by a strong inflow of foreign direct investments (FDI) and a robust manufacturing sector. This is especially in the semiconductor industry.

He reportedly added that Malaysia is expected to attract more semiconductor industries in the future and will be a major beneficiary of the upswing of the semiconductor cycle.
