Malaysia is the fifth most popular destination globally for Chinese tourists, following destinations such as Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Macao SAR and Thailand in descending order of positions.

In fact, the amount spent by Chinese tourists in the first seven days of Chinese New Year is two times that of the same period in 2019 and ten times that in 2023.

These were the results of Alipay+ and PayNet’s latest data which also revealed the robust rebound of Chinese tourist consumer spending that showed a 580% increase in 2023 between Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore combined.

“New visa-free policies from major Southeast Asia destinations, including Malaysia, are critical enablers of the cross-border travel boom,” said the report.

Interestingly, Chinese globe-trotters are expanding their interest from traditional activities such as shopping and visiting major tourist sites to more immersive and unique local experiences.

During the week of Chinese New Year, Chinese tourists also spent 70% more on food and beverages as compared to the same period in 2019.

“This partnership, exemplifying how strategic collaborations can drive economic growth and enhance the tourism experience, has facilitated easy payment for international visitors and open up a world of opportunities for local merchants," said Gary Yeoh, chief commercial officer of PayNet.

“With the government actively working to boost tourism, particularly in preparation for Visit Malaysia 2026, our focus remains on enhancing travellers’ cashless experiences,” he added.

Are other tourists increasing their spend?

The data by Alipay+ and PayNet also showed that Malaysia ranks as the sixth most popular destination among other Asian countries.

In February this year, the average number of daily transactions via Alipay+ on DuitNow increased by 2.5 times compared to that in December 2023, signaling a rebound in overall tourist spending with local merchants.

The spending through the e-wallet has also increased by 2.5 times within the same period.

“Looking ahead, PayNet is committed to innovating and expanding our services to support the dynamic needs of tourists and merchants alike, reinforcing Malaysia's position as a top-tier global destination," added Yeoh.
