Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Garuda Indonesia have announced plans to enter into a joint venture agreement to deepen the cooperation between the two carriers, increase passenger capacity between Singapore and Indonesia, and offer customers more travel options between the two countries.

The agreement, which is still subject to regulatory approval, is expected to cover routes between Singapore and Denpasar, Jakarta, and Surabaya, expanding the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that the two airlines signed in November 2021, according to a statement by SIA.

“This joint venture will be a win-win arrangement that elevates the long-standing partnership between Garuda Indonesia and Singapore Airlines,” commented Goh Choon Phong, chief executive officer, Singapore Airlines.

He continued by saying, “Our customers will also enjoy even more benefits, including an improved level of network connectivity, enhanced travel convenience, and additional fare options.”

The agreement will allow both carriers to potentially coordinate schedules between Singapore and Indonesia, offering customers more seamless flight connectivity. The carriers also pledging to explore the new initiatives, such as joint fare products and the alignment of corporate programmes to enhance their value proposition to customers.

“On top of that, this deepening relationship may also strengthen tourist flows between Indonesia and Singapore, which makes it easier for international tourists to create their remarkable South East Asia journey – visiting the uniqueness of Singapore, and exploring the exoticism of Indonesia’s multiculturalism while enjoying the beauty of the scenery across the islands in Indonesia that awaits,” said Irfan Setiaputra, president and chief executive officer, Garuda Indonesia.

This joint venture aims to bolsters the partnership between Garuda Indonesia and Singapore Airlines which began in 2010 with codesharing on flights between Singapore and Denpasar in Indonesia.

Recently, Garuda Indonesia also collaborated with Paragon Technology and Innovation, the parent company of halal skincare brand for women Wardah, and Kahf for men, to provide exclusive skincare with the aim of improving the experience of Umrah and Hajj pilgrims. As part of this partnership, the company introduced a special skincare set for Umrah & Hajj Packages, designed for those embarking on the sacred journey.

In April, Garuda Indonesia transported 400 pilgrims directly from Jakarta to Jedda. Onboard, both male and female passengers exclusive products from the collaboration. These were namely the 'Journey of the Soul’ Umrah and Hajj package from Wardah and the ‘Towards New Beginning’ Umrah and Hajj package from Kahf.

The packages contain products with no alcohol or fragrances and made with natural ingredients. The products included were cleansers, sun shields, moisterisers, body wash, deodorant, and more.
