M1, Singtel and StarHub will retire all its 3G services, including voice while M1, Singtel and StarHub will retire all 3G services, including voice, messaging and data, which are no longer widely used in Singapore from 31 July 2024, according to a joint statement by the telco companies.
With the retirement of the 3G networks, mobile operators will be able to repurpose some of its freed-up spectrum to improve 5G services, which will offer users faster speeds, higher data throughput, as well as enhanced security and reliability.
Don't miss: Singtel launches SG's first 5G-enabled smart retail showcase
The news comes after years of outreach programmes conducted by mobile operators to encourage more people to migrate from 3G to 4G and 5G networks. These newer networks are already Singapore’s preferred mobile networks and serve as crucial enablers for consumer and enterprise users.
As a result, only a small percentage of customers continue to use 3G services, comprising users on older mobile devices or SIM cards that cannot connect to newer 4G and 5G networks, said the telco providers.
In the coming months, more proactive measures will be taken to communicate the transition to 3G users and to extend assistance to those who need help migrating.
Some of these measures include enabling customers to migrate to newer networks more conveniently by making a wide range of 4G and 5G handsets available at different price points. For customers who are still using 3G-only SIM cards, they can visit their operator's website to find out where and how to upgrade their SIM cards.
This comes as more major telcos in Singapore roll out 5G island wide. Recently, Singtel launched Singapore’s first 5G-enabled smart retail showcase to help enterprises adopt digital solutions to meet the ever-changing demands of retail consumers.
Designed to look like a real store, the showcase will feature technology solutions from Apple’s enterprise partners that can help enhance retail workflows, improve operational efficiencies and create a great customer experience, which retailers can explore.
It will be located at Singtel’s Centre of Digital Excellence (CODE) at Telepark, according to a Singtel spokesperson when Marketing-Interactive reached out.
