Shopee to reportedly cut 3% of Indonesia workforce

Sea Group's Shopee reportedly plans to fire 3% of its Indonesia employees amidst a series of job cuts that it has carried out globally so far. According to Bloomberg, impacted employees will be notified today and the group intends to cut its headcount at Shopee Indonesia by "a low-single-digit percentage".
The announcement regarding the potential job cuts was made during a town hall today for affected teams but no specific details were revealed, Bloomberg said. Meanwhile, Sea plans to provide affected employees with assistance and severance packages.
Shopee told Bloomberg that the job cuts are part of its continuous efforts to "optimise operating efficiency" with the ambition of attaining self-sufficiency across its business. MARKETING-INTERACTIVE has reached out to Sea for comment.
The job cuts in Indonesia come shortly after Shopee's parent company said last week that its management will forgo their salary and restrict company expense policies until it attains self-sufficiency. CEO Forrest Li also told employees in a memo that the company is limiting business travel to economy class travel fares and meals on business trips are also capped at US$30 a day.
There seems to be no end to Sea Group's woes as the company recently pulled out of Argentina and exited India, France and Spain a few months ago. It also cut jobs in Shopee earlier this year as well as its gaming unit Garena.
Last month, it also rescinded certain tech jobs in Singapore and China, leaving some prospective employees stranded in Singapore. The company said previously that it had made adjustments to hiring plans and as a result, a number of roles at Shopee were no longer available. The company added that a the vast majority of cases do not involve prospective employees relocating.
