PETRONAS has released two short films to celebrate the Gawai and Kaamatan festivals this year.

The first film, titled ‘Linundus Do Koubasanan’ (‘As Beautiful as Tradition’), follows the story of a young boy named Fridden who has been tasked by his father to help with preparations leading up to the village’s Kaamatan festival.

However, the only thing Fridden has on his mind is playing with his friends as he constantly gets distracted when he helps put up a banner or prepares food with his family. When Fridden finally finished his chores, all his friends have gone home.

Fridden then feels proud of his fruits of labour and gets reunited with his friends at the village’s Kaamatan festival to emphasise the importance of carrying on a tradition and the timeless values of sacrifice.

Set in the picturesque Kampung Kiau, a village in the valleys of Mount Kinabalu, the film also features the Dusun dialect and introduces viewers to the intricate customs that make up the community's way of life.

“Inspired by the spirit of Kaamatan, ‘Linundus Do Koubasanan’ emphasises the importance of preserving our cultural heritage from generation to generation,” said Siti Azlina Abdul Latif, senior general manager of strategic communications, PETRONAS Group.

“Through this film, we also want to highlight the crucial role of unity and tradition in maintaining harmony within the community,” she added.

The second film titled ‘Pesan Inik’ (‘Grandmother’s request’), follows a family celebrating the Gawai festival as the audience hears a grandmother singing a song to remind her grandchildren to uphold tradition.

From the lyrics of the song, the grandmother hopes that her grandchildren cook their meals in happiness together, always keep their brothers and sisters close and welcome guests with a heart full of joy to name a few.

The film then shows a mother and her son looking at pictures of their family and a plaque that says “always uphold tradition” as they talk about how the celebration of Gawai lives on even after the passing of their grandmother.

“Even as times change, progress remains constant when we treasure the values of righteousness,” said PETRONAS in the film.
