Over 2,000 restaurants will roll out a series of discounts and special dining offers on 1 July including egg tarts priced at HK$7.1, to celebrate the 27th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to Chinese rule.

Speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday, Tommy Cheung, a lawmaker representing the local catering industry, said this comes as part of a campaign titled "飲食界 7.1 慶回歸優惠活動 2024" and it is co-hosted by eight catering associations.

As part of the campaign, restaurants, hotels, fast food chains and retailers are offering special deals with prices related to "seven" and "one" to align with 1 July.

From 29 June to 1 July, Hongkongers can enjoy Tai Cheong Bakery's egg tarts at HK$7.1 each, while cha chaan teng chain Tai Hing is also offering a 29% discount for its entire menu on 1 July at all locations, excluding its airport branch.

Meanwhile, Gyu-Kaku is offering a 29% reduction on its premium set dinner. Chinese teahouses under Fu Lum Group and Sportful Garden are giving out a special "handover dinner set" at a 29% discounted price. On the retail front, Circle K is offering a 29% discount for all types of juice at all branches on 1 July, available while stocks last.

On the other hand, The Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel is offering a 29% discount for meals at all its four on-site restaurants from 28 June to 7 July. The Park Lane Hong Kong, a Pullman Hotel's restaurant Playt is offering a 29% discount off its lunch, brunch, afternoon tea and dinner buffet menus on 1 July.

However, Cheung said the number of participating merchants was less than his expectation, where he initially targeted 3,000 restaurants and shops to take part in the campaign.

Simon Wong, the chairman of the Quality Tourism Services Association, believes that substantial discounts will motivate Hong Kong residents to spend time within the city during the upcoming holidays. He also reveals his expectation of the discounts to attract mainland tourists following ten additional cities being included in the Individual Visit Scheme.
