The Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau (CSTB) has appointed New World Development’s CEO and K11 Group’s founder Adrian Cheng Chi Kong as the chairman of the Mega Arts and Cultural Events Committee.
According to the official statement of the government released on Tuesday, the appointment will last for a two-year term from 1 February 2023 to 31 January 2025.
This comes after the city’s leader John Lee said in his policy address in last November that the government would implement the Mega Arts and Cultural Events Fund to further strengthen Hong Kong’s position as a cultural exchange hub between China and the world.
Designed to promote international cultural exchanges, the fund will offer a total of HK$60m of subsidies every year. Large-scale cultural events such as Art Basel and Art Central can apply for up to HK$15m of subsidy, according to the government’s plan.
Adrian Cheng commented on his Instagram on Tuesday that Hong Kong is back and it is his priority and responsibility to reestablish the city’s reputation as an international tourism destination and cultural hub.
“Chairing the Mega Arts and Cultural Events Committee will give me room to position Hong Kong as a Cultural Exchange Hub between China and the rest of the world with no equals,” he said.
He also said he will be bringing unparalleled large-scale cultural events that will nurture the cultural fabric of the city while empowering the next generation of creators and artists this year, and position Hong Kong as the cultural exchange hub between China and the world.
A check by MARKETING-INTERACTIVE saw on his Instagram that many netizens supported the new appointment while some voiced out their demands for bringing large-scale events to the city.
Furthermore, the CSTB has named Helen Chan as the vice-chairman. Eight other members of the committee come from different industries, including former CEO of Emperor Entertainment Group Ng Sui Wan, West Kowloon Cultural District Authority board member Yolanda Ng Yuen Ting, Paul Yeung Kwok Leung, Ann Au Chor Kwan, Winnie Chiu Wing Kwan, Wesley Ng Pui Sun and architect Eric Yim Chi Ming.
