Chinese consumer electronics and mobile communications Oppo has appointed Mother Shanghai as its advertising agency and has kicked off the relationship by launching a campaign for the Reno2 smartphone.
The campaign, which starts today, includes a series of snappy 10 15-second animated videos introducing the arrival of the new device which hit the market in August.
Targeting the Chinese market, the animations are wacky affairs that feature wrestlers, cats, mad scientists, and strange creatures. Each concludes with the announcement that "Reno2 is coming" in Mandarin.
Sam Southward, the British director who was responsible for the wrestlers short said, “Our story is all about high energy, weight, and impact, anticipating the arrival and excitement of the Reno2. I felt that digital stop motion with an organic and tactile feel would be great to create a colourful, fast paced, and memorable animation."
Australian-based director Jarrod Prince, who was the creative force behind the animation of the creatures video said, “My spot for Reno2 was influenced by (Hayao) Miyazaki's films and nostalgia in the 90s. I wanted the aesthetics to feel like Spirited Away meets Twin Peaks.
