Back in November last year, Hong Kong Police Force set up a website featuring a bogus raffle, attracting nearly 300,000 visits in just two weeks amidst an alarming surge of similar cases in the city. According to the official figures by the police, about one in three recorded crimes, or 19,444 cases, in the first nine months of the year were related to scams. In the same period, scam phone calls surged by 130% year-on-year, while bogus employment offers jumped by 226%, accounting for HK$337 million in losses.

As part of the two-week crime awareness campaign, a series of fake advertisements online, as well as on billboards, the sides of buses and OOH offering free air tickets, jobs, shopping discounts or even dating opportunities were published. An embedded QR code also led participants to a fake raffle page. After they clicked the page’s links, they were led to videos educating viewers on how to spot scams.
