The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will reportedly sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Microsoft on 14 May which aims to develop a digitally skilled workforce, particularly in the AI sector in Malaysia.

MCMC wants to work with Microsoft on upskilling the workforce in terms of digital skills, said deputy communications minister Teo Nie Ching on the sidelines of the International Regulatory Conference 2024 (IRC), according to Bernama.

By utilising existing Microsoft resources, MCMC will teach and educate Malaysians about the use of AI and related skills, she reportedly added.

Concerning the IRC event, Teo also explained that the programme aims to bring together regulators from the Asean region and several other countries to share their views and expertise in improving internet access and addressing cybercrimes.

She said that as a region, MCMC engages with platform providers to ensure they strengthen their community guidelines to safeguard vulnerable groups, especially children.

News of the MoU comes shortly after Microsoft announced that it will invest US$2.2 billion (RM10.5 billion) to advance new cloud and AI infrastructure in Malaysia over the next four years to support Malaysia’s digital transformation.

The investment includes building digital infrastructure, creating AI skilling opportunities for 200,000 people in Malaysia, establishing a national AI Centre of Excellence and enhancing the nation’s cybersecurity capabilities.

“We are committed to supporting Malaysia’s AI transformation and ensure it benefits all Malaysians,” said Satya Nadella, chairman and CEO, Microsoft.

“Our investments in digital infrastructure and skilling will help Malaysian businesses, communities, and developers apply the latest technology to drive inclusive economic growth and innovation across the country,” he added.
