Malaysian born actress Michelle Yeoh has been voted into the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as an independent individual. She was one of eight new members voted in on the final day of the 141st IOC session in Mumbai, India.
Yeoh was elected in accordance with Rule 16.1.1.1 of the Olympic Charter, which allows for up to seven IOC Members to be elected in special cases without a nationality or National Olympic Committee (NOC) requirement, according to a statement by the committee.

“I am honoured to be chosen as a member of the International Olympic Committee. I fully accept all the responsibilities that this offer brings,” Yeoh said during the session.
“Producer and actress Yeoh is a dedicated road-safety campaigner, a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Goodwill Ambassador and a campaigner for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals,” added the committee.
At the session, four women and four men were elected to bring the total number of IOC Members to 107. The addition of the new IOC members brings the proportion of women in the IOC committee to 41.1%, in line with the IOC’s ambition to lead by example and increase female representation in governance structures.
Before the vote, Britain’s Princess Anne, the chair of the IOC’s member election committee, reportedly introduced Yeoh as a Malaysia junior squash champion. She added that her other skills whisked her away from her sporting career but Yeoh maintained a lot of interest in sports throughout her acting career.
Being the first Asian woman to win an Academy Award for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once, Yeoh's election into the IOC committee is an important milestone in female as well as Asian representation.
Yeoh has also collaborated with skincare brand La Mer when they unveiled several video teasers featuring Yeoh's ballet and martial arts moves to reveal their collaboration on a new skincare product.
