The Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) and Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance the global footprint of Malaysian tech companies.

Through the MoU, current and export-ready Malaysian tech companies will have their global footprint strengthened through more concerted and collaborative trade promotion initiatives, according to a statement by the corporation. The MoU also aims to further strengthen existing alliances and strategic cooperation between both agencies.

“Under MDEC's Malaysia Digital (MD) Catalytic Programmes (PEMANGKIN), we promote nine sectors, which we believe can drive high-value digital export and provide a launchpad for tech companies to expand globally,” said  Mahadhir Aziz, chief executive officer of MDEC.

Mohd Mustafa Abdul Aziz, MARTRADE’s CEO, explained that the MoU will result in a greater level of collaboration between both agencies to accelerate the transformation of local tech champions into global players.

Mohd Mustafa also added that the MoU is in line with the objectives of the newly launched New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP2030), which was recently launched by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Under the NIMP2030, digital and ICT were identified as one of five key focus sectors to help enhance Malaysia’s exports of more complex products and services.

“NIMP, among others, focuses on the government's mission to get Malaysian businesses to embrace technology and digitalisation to drive innovation, enhance productivity and create new opportunities for economic growth,” he explained.

As government organisations in Malaysia ramp up their efforts to drive the nation's digital economy, CelcomDigi has also signed a memorandum of understanding with South Korean technology company VIRNECT which aims to develop and commercialise industrial extended reality (XR) solutions in Malaysia.

Through its Innovation Center, CelcomDigi will collaborate with VIRNECT and XRA, VIRNECT's local partner and support team in Malaysia, to co-create industrial learning programmes that utilise metaverse and artificial intelligence (AI) based solutions in higher learning institutions in Malaysia, according to a statement by the brand.
