Minister of communications Fahmi Fadzil said that no formal request has been made to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to remove the Man on the Run documentary. This is the film that former prime minister Najib Razak is currently attempting to get Netflix to take down due to statements made in the show.

"I haven't received any information about the matter from the MCMC. I understand the request was raised in court," said Fahmi at a Cabinet meeting press conference.

He clarified that no request has reached his department for action either.

"If there is, we will go through the process, but at this time, I haven't received an application," he explained.

This comes after it was reported that Najib's lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, had filed an application in High Court urging the Malaysian government to remove Man on the Run from Netflix.

In addition, the former prime minister had reportedly threatened legal action against former attorney general Tan Sri Tommy Thomas and Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown over statements they made in the documentary.

Man on the Run is a 98-minute documentary film currently airing on Netflix. It revolves around the ongoing 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal and features interviews with politicians and personalities including Najib himself.

The minister added that the Cabinet meeting did not discuss former prime minister Najib Razak's application for amnesty from the Pardon Board, emphasising that the process is the prerogative and at the discretion of His Majesty the King.

The Pardons Board is reportedly set to make a decision on Najib’s application by the end of January, the verdict of which could have political ramifications for incumbent prime minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government and the country’s monarchy.

Najib had filed for a royal pardon in September 2022 at the beginning of his prison sentence, according to media reports and is currently serving a 12-year prison sentence for misappropriating RM42 million from SRC International.
