Malaysia aims to be among the top 20 countries in the global startup ecosystem index by 2030, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Kuala Lumpur will also be turned into a regional startup and digital hub, he added.

The prime minister added that the two-day KL20 Summit 2024 will be a forum to facilitate startups in high-value investments and will encourage startups to expand abroad by leveraging on a complete global ecosystem chain.

In a statement, Anwar said he appreciated the partnership from venture capital firms and investors who are part of the summit. He added that it's important that government policies consider their long-term perspectives and strategies too.

In tandem, Anwar stressed that the Malaysian government is determined to support startups through clear policies that encompasses the country's visions, strength of resources and investor perspectives.

In the same statement, he added that the Madani Government remains committed to creating a dynamic startup ecosystem to position Malaysia as a central hub for entrepreneurship and innovation.

Earlier in March, the Malaysian government and Google collaborated on two initiatives to equip Malaysian youth with artificial intelligence (AI) skills and to enhance public service delivery with the help of cloud-native, AI-driven productivity tools that will strengthen Malaysia’s digital competitiveness.

The first initiative involves the Ministry of Higher Education to upskill Malaysian youth from diverse backgrounds by providing 161 institutes of higher learning with 500 Google Career Certificate scholarships each until the end of 2024.

“This is a significant step toward creating inclusive growth opportunities for more Malaysians and strengthening the country’s digital advancement—goals that were central to the strategic collaboration we signed with the Government of Malaysia late last year,” said Karan Bhatia, global head of government affairs and public policy, Google.

“As governments around the world consider how they can make the most of the AI opportunity, Malaysia is embracing technology as a key driver of national competitiveness and spearheading secure and responsible AI adoption in the public sector,” added Bhatia.
