The Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) will reportedly be continuing research and development (R&D) efforts to increase palm oil-based exports in China.

According to a report by the Malay Mail, the Palm Oil Research and Technical Service Institute of Malaysian Palm Oil Board (Portsim) has enabled several palm oil-based value-added products to be commercialised in China.

“China's import preferences are evolving, extending beyond basic cooking oil to a demand for specialised fats with distinct functionalities,” said Fadillah Yusof, deputy prime minister and minister of plantation industries and commodities, in a Facebook post on 13 November 2023.

Fadillah is currently on an official visit to China, with the aim of “further strengthening cooperation in the field of research and development (R&D) as well as capacity development in commodities,” he said on Facebook.

“Delving into the future, the focus shifts to securing market share in China,” he added, addressing the need to capitalise on the demand for specialised fats. This will also aim at “aligning products with evolving consumer tastes, and staying ahead in fat tech innovations.”

He added that his visit to Portsim China served as “a strategic exploration, paving the way for dynamic involvement in China's expanding palm oil industry”.

A+M has reached out to MPOB for more information.

This forms part of Malaysia’s larger efforts to promote its palm oil industry. In October 2023, it was reportedly working with foreign experts to improve the image of palm oil internationally.

Fadillah reportedly said that the benefits of palm oil, which include Vitamin E and antioxidant properties, are not being publicised widely enough.

He added that the government is looking to find neutral parties such as foreign scientists to confirm these benefits and help market palm oil products. Statements from these scientists could then be disseminated through electronic publications or social media.
