KFC MY curates playlist, serenades consumers as dine-in reopens

KFC Malaysia has launched a music-parody video of the lovelorn from a store’s perspective to show how much its customers are missed. Borrowing popular song lyrics, the video features a KFC store humorously serenading the return of dine-in, linking to a specially curated 86-track trilingual Spotify playlist titled “KFC You Soon”. The video features the best of “Missing you” songs, to commemorate each of the 86 days that dine-in services were unavailable at KFC.

This parody video comes after the KFC stores started to relaunch dine-in services across the country with social distancing measures in place. According to KFC, customers will now be able to experience the sounds of laughter drifting from the tables and chairs, the iconic brown trays and sauce dispensers and the irresistible smell of freshly prepared KFC Chicken at KFC restaurants once again. The latest campaign was done in collaboration with Naga DDB Tribal.

“Over the past few months, restaurants have generally been quiet and lonely. If the tables, chairs, trays and sauce dispensers could speak, they would probably tell people how much they’ve been longing for their presence,” creative directors Jeremy Yeoh and Suryadipura Salleh said. Both added that as KFC reopens its stores for dine-in across the country, the team came up with the idea of serenading people back through song instead of doing the regular announcement.

This is not the first time KFC has gotten consumers bopping their heads to its curated tunes. Last December, the brand created hype around the return of its Hot & Cheezy Burger with a marketing campaign titled "WOW My Burger’s Now Hot & Cheezy Volume 1".  As part of the campaign, KFC created its own songs list with mock titles of famous songs which can be accessed by scanning the logo on competitors' burger wrappers. These KFC song titles include Return the Mac, Kau Burgerku, Uptown Cheese and Cheese Drives Me Crazy. The campaign also features the beloved Hot & Cheezy mascots.

Meanwhile in May last year, KFC unveiled a “Bucket Bangers” Spotify playlist globally comprising hip-hop songs that have referenced the brand. Some of the hip-hop songs listed on the playlist are from artists Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, Kendrick Lamar, Madonna, Freddie Gibbs and Madlib, among others.

Closer to home, KFC Singapore also mimicked Apple’s product launch to introduce its new Chipotle Meltz through its own launch video, playfully pointing out the uncanny similarities between the Chipotle and a mobile phone.
