KFC Malaysia has added a creative twist to their annual Raya campaign, by dropping an exclusive baju Melayu (traditional Malay outfit) and baju kebaya (traditional dress) for cats.

Cat lovers can purchase the outfits on KFC Malaysia’s TikTok Shop, for RM55. Each outfit has sizes ranging from S to L, and is made with interlock polyester. According to KFC Malaysia, the outfits are handmade by local Malaysians.

The “Raya meowriah” baju Melayu features a KFC sampin ('wrap') pattern in brown, green, yellow and red. Within the traditional motif print, is a KFC Zinger burger. Meanwhile, the pattern on the baju kebaya features KFC’s main product, the fried chicken. Both outfits are donned with a colonel bow tie, the signature look for KFC’s founder Colonel Sanders.

With every purchase of the Raya outfits, customers are also entitled to redeem one free KFC Zinger meal and iced lemon tea. The clothing sets will also come in a special cat-themed “Raya meowriah” packaging.

As a part of the campaign, KFC Malaysia also released a series of videos on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, featuring furry little models cat walking to show off the two outfits.

The fast-food brand also unveiled a new ad introducing its new KFC Turkish spice fried chicken and burger on YouTube. The video features a cat in the KFC “Raya meowriah” outfit. The cat is seen licking its paws just as the brand's “it’s finger lickin’ good” tagline appears on screen.

The use of felines in Malaysian ads and social media content is nothing new, but is well loved by locals. Checks by A+M revealed that KFC’s Instagram post garnered over 3K likes in just 2 days. Netizens in the comments have also identified the cat models as pet influencers @chubbycat_69 and @iammeimeithecat.

Meanwhile on TikTok, KFC Malaysia’s teaser of the 17 March drop brought in over 797K views. The brand had been teasing the Raya outfits since two weeks ago, when it wished everyone Happy Ramadan with a poem about cats with the caption “Eh, kenapa Oyen ada dekat situ? Nantikan sesuatu yang isti-meow-a tak lama lagi” ('Why is there a tabby cat there? Await something special coming soon').

This Raya, online fashion platform ZALORA has also released festive costumes for cats to match their owners. Its Lubna Meow series comes in kebaya, kurung, and kurta sets for both male and female cats. The coordinated outfits come in two sizes, but checks by A+M have found that most of the sizes are now sold out since its launch on 10 March.

Last year, Tenaga Nasional (TNB) released a Raya short film featuring Jero the cat, a character which has been appearing on TNB's festive ads for the past few years since 2017. He captured hearts in past ads as a side character but stepped into the limelight behind 2024's celebration.
