Kamal Khalid is joining Celcom as chief corporate and transformation officer on 1 February, providing leadership to the various corporate functions including legal, regulatory, societal development, sustainability, enterprise data governance and program management. He was previously group MD for Media Prima until 31 March 2020 and served the group in multiple capacities since 2009.

These include roles as CEO, Media Prima Television Networks; COO, group shared services; COO, business development; and international and head of content distribution. Media Prima said previously that Kamal played a pivotal role in completing the first phase of the group’s business transformation efforts, Odyssey, which focused on revenue diversification across digital, commerce, and going beyond Malaysia. Before 2009, Kamal was head of communications for the Prime Minister. He began his career at Bumiputra Merchant Bankers before working his way up various companies involved in tech and venture financing, thereafter joining Bursa Malaysia in 1998, then known as Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange.

The telco entered 2021 with new appointments on its management team. Last year, it named former MD of Onsite Services Afizulazha Abdullah as chief operating officer (technology) to provide overall leadership across the various technology functions. At the same time, it also appointed Allan Bonke as chief commercial officer to lead all revenue generating units with focus on strengthening Celcom's value proposition and competitiveness in the market. This month, it appointed Pravind Menon as head of risk and compliance.

CEO Idham Nawawi said the leadership changes reflect its "continuous determination to bring the best talent locally and internationally". This comes as it strives to become a high-performing digital company that focuses on building a sustainable revenue and market share growth, while keeping a close tab on consumers' needs.

"Amid the challenges of the pandemic, our digitalisation and transformation journey for all aspects of the business adopts the best practices of governance and compliance, enhancing our cyber security systems and always protecting customers’ data,” Idham said.
