Indonesia’s Nusantara Capital City Authority (IKN) has reportedly unveiled its vision for ecotourism in the new city, adopting a sustainable urban forest concept.

IKN Authority’s head, Bambang Susantono reportedly told media representatives in a briefing with the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry earlier this week that the green space covering 65% of the capital area of 256,000 hectares would not be reduced due to the project and that tourism would not damage the local ecosystem, according to The Jakarta Post.

Instead, The Jakarta Post reported that the focus would be on innovative development aimed at establishing Nusantara as a distinctive tourist destination, he said, proposing “Indonesia X” as a brand for the tourism program. Instead, the green space would be restored so that tourists can coexist with nature.

The initiatives, Susantono said, would be connected with other tourist activities in East Kalimantan, incorporating visits to the Dayak Penyah cultural village, tourist spots in Tenggarong, marine tourism on Derawan Island and a journey to the nation’s capital, which could be accessed via the newly constructed toll road to Samarinda.

According to reports, on the same occasion, Nusantara’s undersecretary for social, cultural and community empowerment, Alimuddin announced that 17 cabins will be put in place to accommodate travellers, along with the opportunity to explore the city’s forested areas as part of the region’s tourist destinations. He reportedly added the point zero carried profound historical significance and would become an iconic symbol commemorating the archipelago.

With a forward-thinking attitude, Alimuddin added that major hoteliers such as Marriott will want to invest in IKN in the near future, upon its establishment. Moreover, the IKN Authority said the construction of a VVIP airport in the national capital would begin at the end of August, which could potentially improve access and connectivity for travellers, given its proximity to the central core government area.

On the travel front, YouGov recently published a survey concluding that online travel companies are the most popular option for travellers in Indonesia. The survey found that travel platform, Traveloka was the most popular amongst Indonesia travellers who were looking to perform mudik which is the act of travelling back to their hometowns over Ramadan.

When it comes to what travel booking methods Indonesians prefer, it seems that online travel companies are the most popular with three in five consumers or 57% saying that they purchased their mudik transport tickets over the web from online travel companies this year. 42% purchased their tickets directly at stations or terminals while 27% used offline travel agents and 19% on the websites of transport providers.
