Indonesian transportation minister Budi Karya Sumadi has reportedly urged Indonesian airlines to upgrade their technology to anticipate risks in information technology.

One such risk includes the recent Microsoft Windows outage which affected airline activities.

Speaking to media at the 2024 National Road Safety Week, the minister reportedly said that the government will push the aviation industry to prepare its backup well, according to Antara.

He reportedly emphasised that the system outage should also push stakeholders in the national aviation industry and airline passengers to evaluate their performance.

Moving forward, the minister reportedly suggested that airlines prepare contingency plans and utilise better technology to prevent possible future system outages.

He reportedly added that airlines should not depend on a single system too.

Meanwhile, Sumadi reportedly revealed that low-cost carriers such as Citilink Indonesia and AirAsia Indonesia were the most affected by the recent outage.

However, both airlines have addressed the issue, reported no significant operational losses and have restored normalcy in its operations, Sumadi reportedly said.

He reportedly added that the disruptions were on a manageable scale and that operations recovered the next day.

Indonesia's aviation industry has been seeing some changes as of late. Earlier this month, Singapore Airlines and Garuda Indonesia received the approval of the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS) for a commercial joint venture agreement.

With CCCS' approval, the airlines will be able to deepen its strategic partnership on a wider range of commercial activities such as operating joint revenue sharing flights between Singapore and Indonesia, coordinating flight schedules to offer travellers more options and seamless connectivity, and exploring joint sales and marketing initiatives.

In addition, the carriers have also been working on initiatives including giving KrisFlyer and GarudaMiles members the option to earn and redeem miles on codeshare routes.
