IBM will reportedly be laying off staff across its marketing and communications teams. This comes after IBM said it would cut 3,900 positions on its earnings call in January last year.

The announcement was made to employees in a seven-minute meeting by Jonathan Adashek, IBM’s chief communications officer, according to a person with knowledge of the matter to CNBC.

In fact, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna also told CNBC that employees were undergoing a massive upskilling on artificial intelligence (AI) as the company plans to replace around 8,000 with AI.

IBM also expects to exit 2024 at almost the same level of employment it entered with after it disclosed a workforce rebalancing charge that would represent a single digit percentage of IBM’s global workforce.

MARKETING-INTERACTIVE has reached out to IBM for a statement.

News of IBM’s layoffs come in the wake of a string of tech layoffs in the first quarter of 2024 as Google, said hundreds of staff in its ad sales team are impacted.

In a conversation with MARKETING-INTERACTIVE, a Google spokesperson said every year Google goes through a rigorous process to structure its team to provide the best service to our ads customers.

"We map customers to the right specialist teams and sales channels to meet their service needs,” the statement reads.
