Huawei demonstrates 5G prowess through virtual kung fu fight

Last year, with the aim of becoming a global technology leader, China made 5G services available to consumers. Following that gear shift, Huawei is touting its own 5G capabilities through a Kung Fu short film.

Huawei released the “5G Kung Fu Showdown” video in January, which features a confrontation between a kung fu master and a mobile gamer. The fight between the two participants was staged in a virtual arena with the help of 5G technology.

The kung fu master was equipped with a haptic body vest, a precise positioning tracking system, and a pair of VR glasses so he could see, sense, and feel attacks from the gamer in real-time. Meanwhile, the gamer sat in a chair with a vibration function, with the high-speed data transfer and extremely low latency of 5G enabling them to feel blows from the kung fu master in real-time as well. The notable part of this all being the two competitors were hundreds of miles away from each other.

“The unfolding 5G era offers an incredible opportunity to rethink the role of smartphones. It’s in our DNA to push creative boundaries by leveraging technology, and we were thrilled to develop this innovative campaign with Huawei, using the Mate 30 Pro to deliver a 5G-powered immersive gaming experience," commented Chris Reitermann, global client leader of WPP Team Huawei.

The video has been well-received by the Chinese audience, garnering nearly 50 million views and generating more than 50,000 discussions on Weibo within only a few hours of its release.
