Hong Kong Tourism Board reveals details of HK$100m promotional campaign

Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) will offer consumption vouchers to tourists that can be used at over 130 attractions, retailers, eateries and bars as part of the HK$100 million "big promotion campaign" to win back visitors.

This comes as Hong Kong's chief executive John Lee said the city will launch a "big promotion campaign" next month to lure back tourists and businesses after the reopening of the border between the city and mainland China. HKTB has unveiled more details about its promotional bid, of which it will give out vouchers and offers to first batch of visitors that can be used in more than 100 bars, restaurants and hotels for a free drink or redemption for consumption amount and offerings at more than 130 attractions, dining or retail outlets and transport operators.

Free air ticket giveaway will be offered by the Airport Authority Hong Kong. HKTB will also roll out various offerings with different trade partners such as airlines, travel agents and hotels, and encourages trade partners to provide offerings to welcome back visitors.

To connect various sectors to jointly broadcast messages of warm welcomes, HKTB has prepared a series of welcome messages of “Say Hello” to Mainland and Southeast Asian markets from business leaders, celebrities, KOLs to spread positive messages of warm welcomes to travellers. HKTB will also roll out a series of videos showcasing Hong Kong’s brand new experiences in arts and culture, attractions, culinary and more. Furthermore, HKTB will invite 500+ members of the travel trade, media and Hong Kong Super Fans to Hong Kong to enjoy the experiences in person. 

In terms of large-scale conventions and exhibitions, the HKTB has successfully secured 30 large-scale MICE events of various themes to be hosted in Hong Kong starting from 2023, including business management, aviation, technology and medical sciences including 2023 WOW Summit Hong Kong, Global Web 3.0 industry summit o RISE, and more.

A series of flagship events will also be returning to Hong Kong, including the Jewellery & Gem ASIA Hong Kong (JGA) and Jewellery & Gem WORLD Hong Kong (JGW) to be held in June and September 2023 respectively, Cosmoprof Asia and the ASIA FRUIT LOGISTICA, the MICE sector expects a total of about 300,000 participants, which will help attract high-yield business travellers. Big events including the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Art Basel, Clockenflap, Hong Kong Marathon and the Hong Kong Sevens will also return full-scale this year.

On the other hand, HKTB is celebrating Chinese New Year by decorating the harbourfront areas with "lucky rabbit" installations at the Central Pier, Tamar Park, Wan Chai Temporary Promenade and the Hong Kong Cultural Centre viewing deck, which will be available from 19 January to 5 February.

“As Hong Kong has lifted all COVID-19 inbound control measures to global visitors and is gradually resuming cross-boundary travel with the mainland, Hong Kong’s doors of tourism are now open. HKTB’s Chinese New Year celebrations this year will be the first mega event after cross-boundary travel resumes. Centering the world renowned Victoria Harbour, we have specially curated a number of interactive Chinese New Year attractions to invite both locals and visitors to explore the harbour from different perspectives and experience the Chinese New Year festivity, while harnessing good fortunes for the Year of Rabbit,” said Dane Cheng, HKTB's executive director.

Among the checkpoints, the Central Pier will take on a first-ever rooftop decoration with the a giant lucky rabbit that is as tall as two double-deckers, greeting the public from above. Passengers travelling from Tsim Sha Tsui to Central will be warmly greeted by the rabbit as they approach the pier.

Meanwhile, Tamar Park will transform into a fantastic sea of flowers. Layered with more than nine types of 200 colossal LED-lit flowers of over a metre tall with blinging lights, the installations will be set with decorations such as ribbons and Chinese New Year symbols. Visitors cam wave at the three interactive installations to reveal unique light effects. The sea of flowers marks the coming of a warm and festive spring with the blooms.

In Wan Chai Temporary Promenade, a 200-metre rainbow walk will be available with three colour-changing photo-spots located with Victoria Harbour skyline from different perspectives. A series of festive patterns such as treasure coins and fireworks will pop out on the ground immersively as pedestrians pass the middle of the walkway, sending blessings to visitors.
