Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) has invited six celebrity chefs from around the world to visit Hong Kong to promote the city's unique culinary culture to overseas visitors.
The six chefs, which are based in Thailand, the Philippines, Japan, Australia and the United States, were invited to visit Hong Kong for five days and four nights last week to experience Hong Kong's culinary delights. They were accompanied by 12 representatives of the international food writers based in Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Canada, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom.
Led by Vicky Cheng, a locally-raised executive chef who owns two restaurants, the guided tour took the guests to Sai Ying Pun and Sheung Wan dried seafood street to learn more about traditional Chinese ingredients such as abalone, sea cucumber and fish maw. The guests also visited a nearly 70-year-old Chinese tea house to learn more about tea leaves and experience tea tasting.
Furthermore, the guided tour went to star-studded restaurant hopping for diverse tasting, which they learned in workshops from local masters how to make crispy chicken and Peking duck from Silas Li, executive chef of Hong Kong Cuisine 1983 and Chef Choi Dan Fung, executive chef of one-star Michelin restaurant Xin Rong Ji respectively.
Additionally, the group attended a dim sum workshop. Chefs from a Michelin three-star restaurant demonstrated dim sum making in person. The guests tried making a dim sum dish from rolling the dough for the wrappings, as well as filling and steaming dim sums dishes with the unique techniques.
The HKTB expects the trip allows guests to experience the diverse culture of Hong Kong, inspire them in gastronomy, and promote the unique food and culture of Hong Kong to the world, creating positive word-of-mouth and attracting visitors to enjoy the authentic tastes of Hong Kong in person for an experience of “Tasting is Believing”.
