HK YouTuber in court after allegedly charging HK$540,000 for dating courses

Hong Kong YouTuber and influencer Chau Pak Yin has allegedly charged two men a total of HK$540,000 in coaching them dating skills, according to the hearing at Eastern Magistrates' Courts on 7 March.

Chau, also known as “Professor Devil” (鬼王) on YouTube, was arrested by Customs and Excise Department (Customs) April last year for violating the Trades Description Ordinance as he was said to overcharge two consumers on his dating courses, including a Patreon membership charging each subscriber HK$77,090 per month.

Chau has allegedly charged two consumers HK$38,200 and HK$76,000 respectively for the dating technique courses. According to The Standard, Chau also demanded another HK$100,000 and HK$330,000 from the duo respectively for makeover fee, claiming to buy new clothes and accessories, including a watch from luxurious brand OMEGA. Chau allegedly told the two victims that if they did not follow his requests, they would be banned from attending the remaining lessons.

According to the report, the prosecution said that apart from the two victims, four other witnesses would be summoned. Meanwhile, Chau pleaded not guilty to two counts of engaging in a commercial practice with misleading omission. He told the court yesterday that he would defend himself in the trial and was not represented by lawyer, saying he has very confident in himself.He added that he would summon one or two defense witness and that was "ready to fight the prosecution".

Principal magistrate Chui Yee Mei adjourned the trail to 8 and 9 May. Meanwhile, Chau was released on cash bail for HK$10,000.

Furthermore, Chau claimed that the lawsuit against him was a prank, according to the report. He claimed that the Customs arrested a KOL and took credit for it, without knowing that they made a huge mistake. Chau also referred to the Hong Kong blockbuster film "A Guilty Conscience" (毒舌大狀) and claimed that he would turn into "Barrister Devil" (鬼王大狀) when he appear in court next time.
