HK dumpling stores see surge in sales during Dragon Boat Festival, HKers thrilled at celebrations

Local rice dumpling stores have seen a boost in sales during the first post-pandemic Dragon Boat Festival after a four-year break. The festival has also seen over 5,000 participants in dragon boat competitions and has drawn positive sentiments across social platforms in Hong Kong.
According to The Standard, many customers went to Old San Yang (老三陽), a popular store in Causeway Bay, to buy festive food on 22 June. While some customers said they planned to spend over HK$1,000 to buy rice dumplings, some said the taste of rice dumplings from the store reminded them of their hometown.
The owner of Old San Yang, said that while the revenue of store had been recovered after the pandemic, the overall business still dropped due to the corporates not buying large quantities of dumplings, said the report.
Meanwhile, the festival also saw 5,000 rowers coming together to celebrate the Chinese festival. According to SCMP, Alson Wong, chairman of the Stanley Dragon Boat Association, as well as the organiser, said that 171 teams that made up of more than 5,000 rowers took part in Dragon Boat Festival, which was significantly fewer than in pre-Covid years. 272 teams and 269 teams joined in 2019 and 2018 respectively, both years with around 6,000 participants for each team.
Six dragon boat races were held in Stanley, Aberdeen, Sha Tin, Tai Po, Sai Kung and Tuen Mun, in which the race in Aberdeen was the biggest competition for the day, with 28 races throughout the event. According to HKFP, some spectators said that they used to watch the dragon boat races on TV and it was more fun to be watching them on site. Moreover, a volunteer organiser said that while the festival has never ceased to exist during the Covid years and was launched in a smaller scale, the atmosphere was different. Some families also brought their children to watch the races after the pandemic to let them experience the festival atmosphere, according to The Standard.
Media intelligence company CARMA saw HongKongers being thrilled about the Dragon Boat Festival celebrations, with conversations on social media overwhelmingly positive at 58.6%. Keywords associated with "Dragon Boat Festival" in Hong Kong include enjoy, popularity, and influential.
